BACKGROUND

I. Limitations of NEXRAD

II. Effect on Precipitation Estimation

The limited observations of low-level atmosphere may degrade teh radar-based Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE).

  • Underestimation: overshooting the bright band

  • Overestimation: contaminated by bright band.

Overshooting and BB contamination for radar beams              radar-based QPE (one-hour rain accumulation)
